Four years ago when I published this I thought I had seen all the bad road signs. Today I came across this one as the bike trail entered a construction area. Shouldn’t it read “Cyclists Must Dismount”. How does a bike dismount itself?
Road sign English is bad, bad, bad. Take warnings of children at play for example. Road sign English is bad, bad, bad. Take warnings of children at play for example. Shouldn’t there be a comma after the command: “slow”? Otherwise we are singling out children of diminished capacity for warnings which seems unfair, even derogatory. 
Or how about this expression to warn drivers their cars are a bit too hyper? Little bits of Valium for the engines?
I ride a bicycle, not a motorcycle, but we all have the same risks; there is very little between us and an oncoming vehicle and on two wheels one must be ready for any kind of bump in the road. Yet we have these to tell us again.
Yeah, we do that. All the time.

I’ve always wanted to “fix” the “slow children” signs, but it would obviously be a full-time job to fix or replace the bad signs. Actually on a street near our Marysville house they put in those speed mounds and initially called them “speed humps”. Apparently there were complaints…some months later “b’s” were placed to cover the “h’s”. Made me laugh every time I drove by.
