Consider if you will a Europe still dominated by fascist governments like Nazi Germany. Or a Pacific ocean where Imperial Japan remained the dominant force. Or a step further, what if communism had prevailed? In this podcast I take up the selfless heroes we remember at this time who made the way it is possible.
I hate to break it to you America but this weekend is not about barbecues and beer. The holiday is conceived to recall our war dead and remember but for their sacrifice we likely would not lead the lives we do, and largely take for granted. We have remarkable wealth, opportunity, and way of life.

This weekend also I recall a Navy chaplin, Fr. Vincent R. Capodanno, who died in 1967 administering the last rites to dying Marines and tending to the wounded in Vietnam. A North Vietnamese machine gunner cut him down as he rushed to save another life. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 1969. He is now under consideration for sainthood and as such will have his cause for beatification advanced Memorial Day.
The podcast is about 10 minutes.
