“Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” John Adams April 15th, 1814.
I awoke this morning to find the British have done just that. For a long time I have postulated the American Revolution was a mistake, we would have been better off staying united with the mother country, part of a superpower really at a time when Napoleon was rampaging Europe.
Instead we walked away and fought for ideals that seem so remote now. At most we sing about them at baseball games. The founding myths of the country are taught to the next generation but only with the current political view of events redrawing the scenes. Yet some yearn for an earlier time.
Maybe that is part of why people are so angry and revisionist. Rather than going forward to something better we reach back for a time when things are remembered to be better, and ruin the progress the society has made in the process.
So the British are first to turn back the clock. Perhaps we are next. Who knows, we may yet reunite with our mother country and restore the monarch to actual power.
