Tonight I am reading about the second blown call in major league baseball in as many days. I cannot help but draw the parallel to the justice system.
In the film Bull Durham the young players are told “sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about it”.
This is pretty much how trial law goes. Most of the time the right thing happens, then occasionally our bench sees something in a case no one sees. And you know, they make the call.
We have appeals. Baseball players do not. All in all it is better for lawyers than in baseball, where the word seems to be final. But then it is only a game.
No trial begins with the declaration: “Play Ball”.
